Travel Health: Useful Medical Information For Good Health Before Your Departure, During Your Trip And After Your Return.

The diseases most commonly seen in travellers are diarrhoea, malaria (if you travel in a malaria-infested area), accidents (when travelling by car or swimming), wound infections and sexually transmitted diseases. – Diarrhoea is caused by contaminated food and drinking-water. You must therefore be careful if your are travelling in poor hygiene conditions. – Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes, so the first thing to do is to protect yourself against these mosquitoes. – In order to prevent accidents during travelling, it is wise to apply the same precautions as those taken at home. In addition, it is very important that all wounds should be thoroughly disinfected in order to avoid infection. · TRAVELLER’S DIARRHOEA Many intestinal infections are attributable to infections picked up by mouth or hands. With a little care most of these illnesses can be prevented. Hepatitis A, typhoid fever, polio and cholera still occur in countries with poor hygiene, but these diseases are easily prevented. However, the chance is rather large that you will still contract a light and/or nondangerous form of traveller’s diarrhoea. Traveller’s diarrhoea almost always spontaneously clears up after a few days, but can nevertheless be irritating. And a risk to your overall and travel health. In the first place measures must be taken against dehydration. Likewise, treatment of the symptoms must be considered in order to reduce the number of bowel movements and relieve other symptoms such as fever, vomiting and stomach cramps. Sometimes a more serious form of diarrhoea occurs, for which specific treatment with antibiotics is indicated or where hospitalisation or fluid replacement appears unavoidable. It takes only a few basic preventive measures to make your trip a success : Total prevention of traveller’s diarrhoea is impossible and it is obvious that preventive measures can seldom be strictly followed at all times. But following preventive measures do significantly reduce the risk of contracting serious diarrhoea: In order to maintain good travel health wash your hands before eating and avoid (if possible): – raw vegetables and fruits that you have not peeled yourself – uncooked or unpasteurized dairy products – insufficiently cooked sea foods (+ Hepatitis A !) and meat – “local meals” which do not smell fresh – ice-cream bought from street merchants (industrial ice straight from the deep-freeze is probably safe). Cooked meals should be served hot. The place where you eat is also important. A meal taken from a stall presents a greater risk than a meal taken in a restaurant. Avoid restaurants where there are a lot of insects. Avoid tap water and ice-cubes. Bottled water and soft drinks are safe. Watch out for bottle caps that have already been used. It is very important to disinfect drinking-water on adventure trips. Total sterilisation of drinking water is impossible. The following measures considerably reduce the contamination risk and safeguard your travel health: – Boiling the water is very effective. – A good alternative is chemical disinfection with chlorine drops (e.g. Hadex®, Drinkwell chloor®; available in sport shops specialized in outdoor activities) or chlorine tablets (Certisil Combina®; chloramine tablets; available at the pharmacy). Their effect can be improved by first filtering unclear water. Silver salts (Micropur®, Certisil Argento®) are not very suitable to disinfect water, but they keep disinfected water germ-free for a long time. For adventurous travellers conscious to travel health it is best to buy a portable water-filter. The use of antibiotics in order to prevent diarrhoea before it occurs can be dangerous + Also the use of other preventive medications is not recommended. . How to treat diarrhoea? It is extremely important to consume sufficient liquid and salt in order to prevent dehydration. You can do this by taking salt solutions, but tea with lemon, broth, soft drinks and fruit juice, supplemented with salt crackers are tastier. Commercial salt products are available on the market (ORS-solution). Taking an anti-diarrhoea preparation (loperamide, e.g. Imodium®) can greatly reduce the number of bowel movements, with a considerable reduction of the complaints as a result. Imodium® may only be used by adults and older children and only for treating ordinary watery diarrhoea: 1 capsule after every loose movement up to a maximum of 4 per day. Antibiotics are indicated : 1. If blood, mucus or pus are present in the stools. 2. If after 24 to 48 hours, there is no sign of improvement and the diarrhoea is accompanied by fever (above 38.5 C) or severe abdominal cramps, or if there are more than six stools per 24 hours and especially when these also occur at night. 3. Or if because of travel circumstances a quicker solution is absolutely desirable . Appropriate antibiotics are only to be used on doctor’s prescription · SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES Casual sexual contacts tend to be higher while on holiday abroad. Sexually transmitted diseases, particularly AIDS, form therefore an important risk for travellers. Quite often unintentional and unsafe sexual contact takes place under alcohol influence. Prevention while on holiday abroad is no different from the precautions you take at home. Adequate use of a condom, preferably bought at home, is absolutely essential. Only a water-soluble lubricant should be used, but it only offers a partial guarantee (e.g. KY gel). Vaccination against hepatitis B is advised. Always consult your doctor if you think you are at risk, even when there are no symptoms. · MALARIA (swamp fever, malaria) Malaria is an infectious disease caused by a parasite (called Plasmodium) transmitted by the bite of the Anopheles mosquito. There are four different types of which Malaria falciparum is the most dangerous and the most widespread. The incubation period – the time between an infecting bite and the appearance of the disease – varies from ten days to four weeks (rarely several months). The symptoms include attacks of fever, but can initially be quite similar to influenza. If adequate treatment is not started in time, an attack may sometimes result in death within a few days. . Where does malaria occur? Malaria only occurs in those areas in which Anopheles mosquitoes are present : in the tropics and in a large number of subtropical areas. From a height of 1.500 to 2.500 m onwards, depending on temperature and climate, Anopheles mosquitoes are either rare or non-existent. In most big cities there is little or no risk at all of infection, except in Africa where a real risk exists. Risk also exists in the suburbs of the big cities in Asia (e.g. in India). In a number of areas the risk varies according to the season. . How can malaria be prevented? It is very important for travel health to avoid mosquito bites : the Anopheles mosquito only bites between dusk and dawn, is rather small and hardly makes any noise. – In the evening wear light-coloured clothing which covers your arms and legs as much as possible. Apply repellent cream with a DEET basis (20 to 50%, for children and pregnant women preferably 20 to 30%) to the uncovered parts of your body. Repeat this every four to six hours (it will not protect you all night). Non containing DEET repellents were less examined; Autan-Active. and Mosegor. are however excellent safe products. – Sleep in rooms that leave no access to mosquitoes, (mosquito nets on the sills, electrically-warmed anti-mosquito plates, air-conditioning) or sleep under a mosquito net impregnated with permethrine or deltamethrine hung over the bed with the edges tucked under the mattress. If these measures are carried out correctly, the risk of malaria will be reduced by 80 to 90% and travel health is maintained . The intake of pills as prevention There is no drug efficient enough to prevent malaria 100%, which means that quite often a combination of measures is preferable. Also the drugs used have changed over the years. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of drugs should be considered against the risk of malaria infection. These risks are dependent on the visited country, and on the region, the season, the duration of your stay and the kind of trip. Some people might be troubled by the side effects while taking antimalarial drugs. These are usually mild and are not always a reason to stop taking the pills. Sometimes it may be necessary to change to another type of medication due to intestinal problems, allergic reactions or other intolerance symptoms. Therefore it is the doctor who can best decide for each individual which drug to use. This explains why individuals from the same group may end up taking different drugs. Finally, as no drug is 100% effective in preventing malaria, it is important that if an attack of fever occurs in the first three months after your return from the tropics, a malaria infection should be considered as a possibility despite the correct use of the drug prescribed. However, it is reassuring to know that malaria, provided it is recognised in time, is easy to treat without any danger of recurrent attacks. The belief that “once malaria always malaria” is totally untrue.

Should Vertigo Patients Avoid Air Travel?

I meet many interesting people while traveling. For both business and personal reasons I travel a lot. As I was always eager to speak to new people, i will someway start a conversation that had lead to many interesting information’s.

Sometimes vertigo happens to be the common topic. Many people tell me that either by traveling air or car makes their vertigo worse.

There are no certain conditions that cause vertigo and the cause is not always known. What does vertigo mean? It means spinning or whirling that is due to the disturbance in the balance of equilibrium. Vertigo is not considered as a disease, it’s a mere symptom.

The major cause of vertigo is because of a disorder in vestibular system. It can also be due to some problem with the central vestibular system. One of vertigo’s symptom is dizziness. But it do not mean that everyone with dizziness has vertigo.

I have also noted that people who have a problem with height do not fear flying. Many people link vertigo to fear of height due to the Alfred Hitchcock movie. This is linked because both the symptoms are similar dizziness and nausea.

There are different types of vertigo but the most common type of vertigo is BPPV. The onset is usually sudden and tends to last for less than a minute. It is almost always caused by sudden head movements.

Symptoms can include: nystagmus (shaking of the eye), nausea, vomiting and sweating. The attacks can stop or improve after a few weeks or months. However in some cases, they can persist for longer. Your doctor can correctly diagnose you and recommend special head and neck exercises to help prevent the onset of vertigo.

Most people who have this type of vertigo have no issue with the movement of travel but rather, the positioning of their head on the seat. This is what could bring on symptoms for these types of sufferers.

Vertigo can temporarily triggered by alcohol. Therefore, alcohol should be avoided when you fly or drive.

Although not as common, psychogenic vertigo is vertigo caused by a psychological disorder such as anxiety or panic disorder. If suffering from this disorder, traveling could initiate or make symptoms worse.

he motion of travel can affect the parts of the inner ear that help control balance. This happens most when traveling by boat but can by auto and plane travel.

Like vertigo, the onset of symptoms is quick. They include: nausea, dizziness, headache, cold sweats, hyperventilation (which could lead to faintness) and usually vomiting.

Motion sickness can avoided by doing the following while traveling No Smoking, no drinking, not reading while traveling and getting some fresh air.

There are many medicines that are available to treat motion sickness. But these medicines might cause drowsiness in children and infants may agitate.

Jatropha Multifida Juice Has Been Proven Highly Effective In Curing Oral Diseases

The Jatropha multifada therapy is particularly relevant in the third world countries, because of the current HIV/AIDS pandemic. “Oral candidiasis is one of the most common opportunistic infection associated with HIV/AIDS disease; also, it is the most common muco-cultaneous manifestation and it serves as a market of HIV disease progression. Extensive oral infections can cause difficulty with feeding while esophageal and gastrointestinal infections may lead to vomiting and diarrhoea.” Jatropha multifida are small trees or shrubs with smooth gray barks, which exudes whitish coloured watery latex when cut. Other common names are coral plant and adenoropium multifidum. It normally grows to attain a height between three and seven feet. In addition it grows well in the tropics and can thrive in almost every kind of soil. The use of the juice extracts of Jatropha multifida in the management of oral candidiasis is a common practice, Interestingly, they have associated thrush with malaria and depression of the immune system. Documented predisposing factors to thrush in infants include immunosuppression, malnutrition and unhygienic bottle-feeding practices.

All the clinically detected cased of children with oral candidiasis were randomised into either Jatropha multifadum juice extract therapy or the Nystatin group. The juice extracts from the Jatropha multifida leaves were applied to the tongue and the oral mucosal areas affected by candida lesions as a single application in the patients randomised to this group. Oral Nystatin was administered four times a day, for seven consecutive days to the children randomised to the Nystatin group.

The diagnosis of thrush was made clinically in all cases by the researchers after obtaining pertinent history and examination. All cases had their tongues or infected oral mucosa scrapped firmly by applying moderate pressure, using a wooden spatula. Cases in which the whitish materials were scrapped up with consequent cleaning of the underlying tongue or oral mucosa were excluded, while cases that had persistence of white lesions on the oral mucosa were taken to be oral candidiasis. The diagnosed as cases of thrush were then randomly allocated to treatment with oral Nystatin or Jatropha multifida. A clean cotton wool was then used to absorb the fluid that dripped from the cut leaf or leaf stalk. There after, the soaked cotton wool was then gently applied into the mouth and rubbed gently on the tongue from the back to the front. When the inner cheek and the kips were affected, the soaked cotton wool was applied to these areas. Saliva arising from the cleaning and the removed oral patchs was then discarded, there after the mouth was rinsed. On the other hand the Nystatin group were treated with the drug, for every six hours, for an internal of one week. The time of clearance of the white lesions post oral application of either Nystatin of Jatropha multifida was then noted.

The Jatropha multifida leaf juice extract is effective in the management of thrush and works faster compared to Nystatin. Its mechanism of action is, however, unknown, as well as the active ingredient responsible for the antifungal action. The drug however, appears relatively safe because of the absence of complications in the present study. No side effects were reported to Nystatin therapy. However, vomiting and diarrhea are some of the known side effects that might arise from Nystatin therapy. “The Jatropha multifida fruit contain toxins such as toxabulmin ricin. Ingestion of large quantities of this fruit causes severe diarrhea, dehydration, shock and hepatic impairment. Ricin also has cardiotoxic and hemolytic effects and several deaths. On the converse, the roots, stem and leaves of the Jatropha multifida plant possess useful ingredients and activities. The fruits are widely used in traditional folk medicine.

Other chemotherapeutic properties of this plant are used in the treatment of ascites, gout and constipation. “Jatropha multifida is a plant whose juice provides a cure for oral candidiasis. It acts faster compared to Nystatin and compliance on the part of patients is likely to be better since it is a single dose application. It is recommended for use in communities where it is easily accessible. However, having the anti-fungal activities. This can be selectively extracted and make into oral preparations for general and commercial use.

Dream Medicine for Effective Natural Health Therapy

dream are not only meaningful when interpreted. They are also opportunities for emotional, spiritual, and even physical healing. Dreams are products of the unconscious mind. They speak of one’s inner desires in life in general.

In line with past notions on dreams, many people believe that dreams play a vital role in assessing the different aspects of an individual’s life. Some even think that dreams can be used to diagnose a person’s disorders and diseases. Today, dreams are integrated with alternative or natural forms of therapy. These are effectively used to relieve emotional stress and cure the health problems caused by the said stress.

The practice of using dreams for the improvement of health is called dream medicine. Therapists use dreams and nightmares to restore the inner balance of a person. The process of dream healing is an ongoing process of maintaining the harmony of one’s mind, body, and spirit. When this is successfully done, it brings hope and inner peace to the subject.

Dream medicine, as a natural health therapy, can ease a lot of emotional stress. The therapy’s techniques can also have a positive impact on one’s immune system. The healing process is approached by basic dream medicine methods, combined with guided imagery and relaxation methods. People can easily perform dream therapy by themselves, but it’s best to seek the help of a professional dream medicine therapist.

Healing through dreams releases the thoughts and emotions stored in the subconscious. The process provides subjects a feeling of reconciliation, resolution of conflicts, and balance. When both the conscious and the subconscious are in harmony, the subject discovers that different levels of dreams have healing effects. Psychologists say that because most, if not all, people dream during sleeping, dream therapy can be considered as an effective procedure.

Aside from healing the emotional aspect, dreams and nightmares can also be integrated with cancer treatment. Treatment for cancer often causes high levels of pain and discomfort on patients. The effects of chemotherapy procedures on the body make many cancer patients extremely uncomfortable. There are a number of testimonials on how patients used dream medicine as a form of natural health therapy, to deal with the pain of treatment.

Health is Wealth

The idea “health is wealth” is a fairly recent attitude shift. Today, we are more concerned than ever with our health, fitness, nutrition, and overall wellness. The trend in health consciousness coupled with medical progress and awareness has resulted in a 30% drop in mortality rates, and a 56% increase in life expectancy, in just 100 years. People are discovering that while money helps to pay for their lifestyle, there would be no life to style without their health. Thus the focal shift is changing from that of a career driven, workaholic society, to a more well rounded and balanced healthy community. More people are embracing the idea that without their health, their wealth doesn’t much matter.

It is important to note that this refocus on health doesn’t revolve simply around fitness and nutrition, but also on emotional, spiritual, environmental, occupational, intellectual and social health. It encompasses the entire wellness spectrum. By improving each of these facets, even marginally, it is possible to significantly improve the overall quality of life, that proves that health is wealth. While most of the time we tackle issues pertaining to physical wellness with diet plans, and exercise routines, we understand that there are many other dimensions to wellness.

Emotional Wellness

Being comfortable in your own skin is a huge aspect of emotional wellness. There are many ways that being more physically active, and consuming a more balanced diet can help guide you to a place where you are more comfortable with yourself and more emotionally stable, but an obsession over diet and exercise can also have negative consequences. As with anything in life, there is a delicate balance to maintain, and when it comes to your emotional wellness, nothing is more important than learning to understand ourselves.

Spiritual Wellness

Often times spirituality is believed to be a taboo subject because everybody has a different opinion, belief, or conviction but if there is only one thing that we can agree on it’s that spiritual health is wealth in self. It is the most unique dimension of wellness, because it has the most diverse facets within it, and the most personal. No matter what deity you may or may not answer to, spiritual wellness is about inner peace and harmony, and the ability to recognize a common purpose between us all.

Environmental Wellness

Environmental health is wealth to the entire nation, and occurs when we are able to recognize that we are each responsible for how we treat the land, water, and animals that surround us, and that we have a duty to preserve and protect the condition of the Earth. As we learn to eat a more natural diet, of locally grown, preservatives free food, we enhance the beauty of the environment and learn to live more symbiotically with nature. This protection of the environment enhances our lives now, as well as every future life to breathe pesticide and chemical free air.

Occupational Wellness

Finding a job that provides occupational health is wealth expressed in monetary reward but is still just as personal as any other dimension of wellness. It revolves around the fact that you must be personally fulfilled in your career while feeling as though you’re creating a positive impact within the company. Intellectual wellness ties nicely into this concept as well, as a job should more more than a job. It should challenge your mind, and and create new experiences and possibilities.

Social Wellness

Being able to connect with, relate to, and create meaningful relationships with friends, family, and co-workers is all apart of cultivating social wellness. Nurturing new relationships, especially those with romantic interests, takes a solid foundation built on common interests and mutual goals. Strengthening current and future relationships with these qualities is one of the best ways to ensure that they will flourish and thrive.

We aim to be a beacon of knowledge for our readers to gain perspective and insight into the ever evolving world of health and wellness. It is our goal to give each and every person the information they need to make informed decisions about their lifestyle choices. Encouraging this personal empowerment is what will help them reach their health, fitness, and wellness goals so that they may live the life that they desire.

How Hair Loss Affects Mental Health

In almost every culture long and shiny hair is associated with health, beauty, and youth. In such a way, losing hair can become a truly devastating experience for men and women alike. Hair loss can be a result of a number of different causes, including thyroid disorders, hormonal changes, cancer treatment, as an adverse reaction to certain medications, etc. The problem of hair loss can negatively affect the perception that people have of themselves, affect their life choices and even lead to severe depression and social anxiety.

What are the psychological ways of dealing with hair loss?

While beautiful hair can enhance the appearance, it’s important to remember that hair doesn’t define you as a person, and it’s not a life-threatening situation. Some of the approaches to dealing with hair loss include:

Medical approach to hair loss

Fortunately, a lot of people who suffer from hair loss can be helped using modern medications and procedures. The first step is always to determine what causes your hair loss and thus visiting a trichologist should become your priority. In a lot of cases, the problem of hair loss is caused by a different condition than you have suspected, so a full body examination is always a good idea. A medical specialist will be able to guide you in the right direction and recommend any necessary tests or diagnostic procedures. Nowadays, there are a lot of medications that are used to prevent hair loss, and the option of purchasing cheap generic drugs can make your treatment very affordable. If you decide to buy generic drugs online, you should take a look at the reviews left by the customers and find the most trustworthy website that sells high-quality drugs.

Besides pills, there are other methods of dealing with hair loss, including laser treatment and hair transplant surgeries. These procedures can be highly effective, but it’s important always to consult a medical advisor before such an important decision so that you receive the results you expect.
